A special thanks for this biweekly newsletter goes to SSW Chief Bridge Engineer John Schroerlucke, P.E., who broke down the complexities of Lift Planning for us. Before he was done, we asked John a few extra questions about his work on the Project overall:

How long have you been working at the Sixth Street Viaduct Project?
This June will be 5 years on the project.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Developing a design from concept to constructed product. I enjoy the process of applying what we know about physics and engineering to developing an actual design, then working with craftsmen to erect that design. Finally seeing a design built and function as we originally conceptualized is a very rewarding process.

What has been the most challenging part of this project so far?
The biggest challenge on this project is maintaining clear communications to all of the people involved. It’s more than just talking, it requires clear drawings and written reports. All of that information must be shared with everyone on the project, from the laborer maintaining our job site access all the way to the Mayor’s Office!

What’s your favorite way to relax after work?
My favorite way to relax or keep my mind clear is to coach and play ice hockey.
