Samuel “Leroy” Camp is a Mechanic with Operator Engineers Local 12, which means he is responsible for maintaining and repairing machines throughout the Project. At the moment, most of his work is on surface-level equipment such as cranes, excavators and forklifts. He also maintains water treatment plants that will filter water used during the boring process by the TBMs.

Leroy grew up in the garage. His father was a mechanic, so Leroy spent a lot of time working on cars, off-road trucks and drag racers. That background taught him to fix almost anything and how to find the right tools for any job. It's also a pastime that continues in the family; right now, Leroy is rebuilding a truck with his granddaughter.

Leroy has worked on tunnels since 2001. This wealth of experience helps him supervise a team of other mechanics and apprentices on the Project. To those working with him—and for anyone interested in a similar career—Leroy emphasizes the need to plan and think ahead. "You have to see the full picture before you begin working," he says.

No one has taken that attitude more to heart than Leroy.
