This week, Skanska Stacy and Witbeck (SSW) welcomes a new carpenter to the Project. Cedric Washington, Jr. is a Level 1 Apprentice who will be working on the wood framing elements in preparation for concrete pours. Cedric is a recent graduate of the Career Expansion Pre-Apprenticeship Program supported by Supervisor Janice Hahn and The L.A./O.C. Building Trades. The program offered a series of courses that allowed Cedric to receive several valuable certifications and also helped him connect with potential employers.

One of those connections led him to an interview with Jobs Coordinator Veronica Manzo and Senior Structures Superintendent Jeff Anderson. Cedric had also connected with SSW's Equal Employment Opportunity Manager, Michael Richardson. SSW is excited that it could sponsor Cedric joining Southwest Carpenters Union Local 562 and now welcome him aboard the Project!

Cedric shares the excitement. He grew up in Los Angeles and remembers seeing the original iconic Sixth Street Bridge in an Eazy-E music video. Before joining the Project, Cedric's previous work was also on historic buildings, mostly in Downtown. He worked for a construction company that restored old residences into attractive new apartments. Working on the viaduct, of course, will be on a very different scale. Cedric is ready for the work, though, because he has a passion for what he does. As long as you have a passion and work hard (and safe), Cedric told us, then you can get where you want to be. That's great advice and SSW is glad that it's led Cedric here!
