Derian Theberge

Derian Theberge is also a Civil Engineering major and going into his junior year at San Diego State University. This summer, he assists SSW with layout as well as some three dimensional modeling. Derian enjoys math and architecture, and the Project presents many interesting design aspects. For instance, Derian explained that the forthcoming arches are angled away from the bridge, rather than completely perpendicular to the deck.

This summer, Derian has been surprised by how much he has learned from being on site, compared to back in the classroom. Fortunately he likes to be outdoors, so the aspects of being a field engineer appeal to him.

“I've learned a lot about actual hands-on engineering.”

Derian also enjoys design and the creative side of his studies. (He recommended learning AutoCAD when seeking an engineering career.) Participating in internships like this, as well as joining clubs on campus and trying different classes, Derian explained, can be helpful to find which specialty to pursue.

When he's not in class or on the job site, Derian can probably be found at an ice rink. An unexpected location for a Southern California native? Not for Derian. He's been playing hockey since he was 4 years-old and competes on his university's team.

Engineering, like hockey, takes a lot of work and commitment. That's why Derian summed up his profession with two words: tough and, ultimately, rewarding.
