Hector Chavez is a Carpenter Apprentice who started with the Project three months ago and was sponsored by SSW so that he could join the union. Currently, Hector is helping to install cable guides on Y-Bent 13, which will help connect support cables to the forthcoming arches. Hector loves working with wood and being outdoors—he told us he loves everything about his job, actually—and is especially proud to be a part of this Los Angeles landmark. He grew up in LA and knew the original Sixth Street Bridge very well. He's excited to show off the new viaduct to his family when it's completed.

Before Hector joined the carpenter ranks, he served in the United States Marine Corps from 2011 to 2015. Hector was stationed in nearby Camp Pendleton and deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 and 2014. After his service, Hector worked in logistics, but soon discovered that office life was not for him. Encouraged by his brother who works in construction, Hector visited the Occupational Center in East LA to explore opportunities. He was able to visit several different unions and found that he enjoyed the carpenters union the most. A pre-apprenticeship program gave him the skills and tools for the job—literally; Hector was given bags and tools upon graduation.

We asked Hector if he had any advice for his fellow veterans who might be interested in entering the construction industry. Hector very much recommends learning a trade and suggested the Helmets to Hardhats program, supported by Veterans Affairs. Thank you for the great advice, Hector!
