Jeffrey Brown

Even though Jeffrey Brown has over 30 years of experience as an Operating Engineer, this is the first time he has worked on a tunneling project. He previously worked on freeway projects and commercial buildings (including a lot of Starbucks, he told us). Jeffrey's initial work on the Project took place in the TTES, excavating to over 90 feet below ground. He uses a track loader to load "muck boxes" that carry excavated dirt to the surface to be hauled away.

Jeffrey grew up in Michigan and started his career doing demolition work. Then he decided to move to California, where he had family, and went to trade school. From there, he was able to join the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 12. About 20 years ago, Jeffrey purchased a Caterpillar 963B Track Loader. Owning his own equipment opened up new opportunities for work, but also required Jeffrey to operate like a small business, handling his own mechanical maintenance and project accounting.

He has experience operating other kinds of vehicles, too, including backhoes and forklifts, which he is also doing for the Project. There are many safety considerations required for this work and Jeffrey always has to be aware of his surroundings while on site. When we asked his advice to anyone considering a job in the industry, Jeffrey offered encouragement and two words: Be safe.
