Madeline Mello

Working on the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project (Project) is exactly the opportunity that Madeline Mello was looking for. Heavy civil engineering project? Check. Bridge? Even better. Los Angeles and its sunny weather? Definitely.

Madeline just graduated from the University of Michigan and found the Project because it checked off all of her criteria. In doing her homework, Madeline learned that representatives from Stacy and Witbeck were attending a career fair at her college, so she spoke with them about internship opportunities. Her diligence paid off at the beginning of April, when Madeline started as a Quality Engineering Intern.

Before coming to Los Angeles, Madeline had a Quality Control (QC) internship with SpaceX working on construction of their new launch facility in south Texas. Similar to her current role, Madeline conducted site surveys, managed subcontractors and helped to keep the project on schedule. She always does her best to catch quality issues early in order to minimize redoing work and keep progress moving forward.

Madeline discovered her interest in construction while participating in the University of Michigan Steel Bridge Team, a year-long engineering project. After her SpaceX internship confirmed her passion for construction, Madeline wanted to work on a project that would have a bigger impact on the surrounding community.

Madeline graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and believes the experience made her a great problem solver. She enjoys hands-on activities—which includes restoring racing bikes from the 1970s and 1980s in her spare time—and constantly learning new things. Madeline even convinced her younger sister to pursue an engineering degree; she starts at Michigan Tech this fall.
