Rocio Garay

Rocio Garay moved to Los Angeles at the age of 17 and got her first job working at a carwash, detailing and washing cars. Ms. Garay had been working at the carwash for 12 years, when a friend noticed how hardworking and dedicated she was and asked if she would be interested in becoming a Laborer with the union. Rocio considered the pay and benefits of working in construction and said yes!

She enrolled with the union and was invited to take their rigorous boot camp. Out of 30 participants, both men and women, half of participants dropped out of the boot camp, leaving Rocio as the only female left standing. Rocio was told by some of her fellow boot camp colleagues that she was an inspiration to them and the reason why they kept going.

Rocio is a mother of 3 young children and for that reason alone, she is dedicated to work hard and providing a secure future for her family. She loves her job and working on the Sixth Street Viaduct Project and is very proud to show her children the work she is doing and what she is building. In her spare time, she loves reading particularly Spanish literature. Her favorite book is "El Conde de Montecristo". Don't let her petite stature fool you, she is one tough lady!
