Martin Tamayo was born and raised in Long Beach and attended Millikan High School. Martin is now a senior at Cal State Long Beach majoring in Civil Engineering and has spent a few months with the SSW team, interning on the Sixth Street Viaduct Project.
Martin was able to join the team in an unconventional way, when he met Jeff Anderson, SSW Structures Superintendent, while he and his father were painting Jeff's boat; A prime example of being in the right place at the right time! Jeff mentioned the internship as an opportunity use his engineering knowledge and join the team, which prompted Martin to research SSW and start the application process for an internship on the 6th St Viaduct Replacement Project.
Four months into the internship, he has learned many new things like reading construction plans, learning about project requirements, and working with different government agencies and departments. When Martin is out on the job site he assists with survey, "shooting grades" and calculating elevations. Martin's favorite part of his internship is getting hands-on experience working with the SSW team out in the field and the advantages his time on the project will provide for his future career as an Engineer!
